if I could

Over a year ago, my daughter and I watched a television program called Motor City Rising.   As you might have assessed from the show title, it was about revitalization in Detroit.  We were especially interested in a non-profit featured on the program, Humble Design.  As I watched the segments of the program that specifically showed Humble Design at work, I realized I would absolutely love being involved in something like it.  This is their mission:

Our mission is to help families in need with safe, clean and welcoming homes. We minimize the impact on the environment by matching clients with donated & gently used household goods.

I started following them on Twitter.  Every once in a while, I’d search for info about what they were doing via the internet.  But time went by and my mind went to other things like sending my son to college, watering flowers, picking my daughter up from soccer practice, etc.  For the longest time I wasn’t sure if they’re still operating.  Well, lately I’ve seen more traffic via their Tweets.  I’ve looked at their website.  They seem to be running strong.

I work at a non-profit so technically……my job is helping people.  But I long for something like what they’re doing at Humble Design.  Utilizing my creativity while at the same time helping people would be so,………awesome.  [my family disparages my use of the word awesome!]  I may or may not over use it.

Something I created out of trash.

My first college major was Interior Design.   Whether I could have made myself into a successful Interior Designer will never be brought to fruition.  I was doubtful, so I moved on.  Yet as  I sit here looking at a framed photograph I took that’s hanging on my wall, I have to wonder…….. Is there still hope for me and my creative dreams?  I just this afternoon checked out an issue of House Beautiful from the library.  And upcycling?  I’ve created boxes of {something out of trash} ready to be posted to my Etsy store.

I’m not one to easily share my dreams.  I’ve found people, for the most part, don’t care so much.  Or they don’t comprehend my thoughts and ideas because they {people} are vastly different than me.  So here, in this relatively safe environment of my personal blog, I proclaim to the world I believe I’d enjoy driving around all day, picking up discarded furniture on curb sides and helping it all to find new homes where it would be needed and appreciated.  Yes, that sounds a bit corny.  And there’s a lot more to it than that.  I’m all for making the world a better place.  And I believe the happier and more comfortable people are  at home, the better the world will be.  It’s part of a circle of beauty and what matters.  I believe that wholeheartedly.  Which is why,

if I could,

I’d help families in need with safe, clean and welcoming homes. I’d minimize the impact on the environment by matching clients with donated & gently used household goods.

What would you do, if you could?
